Information for Teachers

JIKF and the student's school complement each other and reinforce the lessons each is trying to teach.

The student's rank in karate-do is tied to how they apply the lessons we teach in the dojo (karate school) to their life at home and at school. In addition to the regular Parent Evaluation, we also request evaluations by the student's primary or homeroom teacher.

Evaluations

Before each exam for rank in karate-do, the student must return an exam registration form which includes a teacher evaluation section. You'll be asked to confirm progress, or a continued high standard, in these areas:

  • Academics (grades, study habits, homework)
  • Citizenship (conduct, manners, respect towards others)

Students under the age of 16 are not allowed to take the test for their next rank until this information is complete. If lack of progress or a low standard is indicated, the student must file a plan for improvement with the instructor before the student can test.

Consider performance over the shortest time span of:

  • when the student began karate training,
  • when you became the student's teacher, or...
  • since the last evaluation you did for the student.

Community Education and Enrichment Programs

JIKF has been a welcome part of many area schools' Community Education and Enrichment programs. School teachers, administrators, and parents praise the JIKF program and its ideals for personal and community development.

Recently, we've completed mene hune (preschool) programs at Rushton Child Development Center in downtown Birmingham and MyGym in Hoover, Alabama. We had a class at Cahaba Heights Elementary that was so well liked that we opened a separate (retail) location. We currently participate Community Education and Enrichment programs at the following institutions:

  • Paine (elementary & intermediate) School in Trussville, Alabama
  • Grantswood Community (K4-5, elementary) School in Irondale, Alabama
  • Montevallo Elementary School in Montevallo, Alabama

In the Press

Here's an except from an article covering our Community Education classes at the Paine School in Trussville, Alabama:

"The JIKF program takes a traditional Japanese approach to Karate Do, pronounced with a long 'oh' sound and translated as 'the way of the empty hand'. The focus is on building strong students through sound fundamentals. Rather than breaking boards or bricks, JIKF's youth program encourages the students to break bad habits by tying good character traits like neatness, manners, and good behavior to the student's actual rank in karate. JIKF's highly qualified instructors are experienced in structuring their classes for young people with special needs as well. Students are not encouraged to compare themselves to others, but to judge themselves on how much they improve over their own previous level of ability."

Educational Seminars Available

Contact us to request an educational seminar on the history and purpose of karate for your school or center. The seminars are run by a senior instructor and last approximately 45 minutes, depending on length of your health or physical education period. We've been performing these in area schools since 1977. Age-appropriate language is used according to the class level. An outline of the covered material is available upon request.
